Campus Illumination--a Campus Sustainability Fund project--wants to better understand how the campus is experienced when it is dark. The team hopes to collect your invaluable feedback through an interactive map survey to use as a foundation for creating a roadmap toward sustainable exterior lighting at the UW.

The project is led by an interdisciplinary team from the Integrated Design Lab, the Office of the University Architect, and Seattle City Light's Lighting Design Lab to guide the UW as it transitions to more energy efficient outdoor lighting. The project is looking at sustainable lighting from a comprehensive perspective, encompassing efficiency, maintainability, wildlife impact, and the human experience. The roadmap is set to be completed in the Spring quarter of 2017.

The CSF-funded Yesler Swamp Trek Stop is looking for management support from student interns this quarter and beyond! The objective of the project is to construct a bird blind on the shoreline of the Yesler Swamp lagoon on Lake Washington in order to provide UW students and visitors a unique wildlife observation platform. 1. Permitting Manager – Oversees the projects land use and construction permit applications
Duties:
Completing Seattle’s land use permit submittal checklist and verifying that all requirements are met

Duties:
Administering CSF funds to pay for design consultant fees and permitting fees

The mission of the Campus Sustainability Fund (CSF) is to create a sustainable campus and foster an environmentally conscious culture by funding student-lead projects from a portion of student fees to lessen the university’s environmental impact. The CSF is currently seeking a student to serve as the primary staff point of oversight and management for all aspects of the organization. 

The CSF Coordinator will be a team player as well as a self-starter, with excellent collaboration skills and ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty and staff. Other important characteristics for a coordinator include strong project management skills; attention to detail; ability to prioritize; flexibility and resilience; creative problem solving skills; ability to gain consensus; ability to manage sensitive situations; superior verbal and written communication skills; and proficiency and comfort presenting to both small and large groups of people.

Qualifications
Required
Bachelors degree in a related field and currently matriculated in a UW graduate program (or planned for Fall 2016)
Approximately 2+ years work experience in related positions or with related functions  Interest in and knowledge of sustainability issues both on and off campus
High degree of professionalism, integrity and ownership; high energy and results oriented
Team player, flexible and open to new ideas and continual improvement or change
Excellent written and oral communication, presentation, analysis, project management, and financial reporting/budgeting skills.
Excellent skills with Microsoft Office (Access, Excel, Outlook PowerPoint, Word)

Desired
Knowledge and experience with operational and financial planning
Previous program and/or staff management experience
Knowledge of UW budget and accounting systems

Duties
Required
Lead the solicitation and vetting of project proposals from UW students, faculty and staff.
Support & organize the CSF Committee
Track and report on active CSF projects
Oversee multiple budgets (both internal and external)
Guide strategic initiatives  Pursue and secure auxiliary revenue streams
Maintain strong relationships with the CSFs myriad of campus partners
Manage up to 3 part time staff and 3-6 regular volunteers at any given time
Continue to raise the visibility and profile of the CSF throughout UW.

As a volunteer with this program, you will work closely with the CSF Outreach Coordinator to expand the reach of the CSF across campus through outreach visits, tabling opportunities and other communication platforms. This position accommodates flexible schedules, is conveniently located on campus, and provides opportunities for both collaborative and individual work environments. Through this role you will greatly develop your environmental advocacy, public speaking, professional networking, communication and public relations skills. The 2016 MobilizeGreen Annual Conference and Diversity Career Fair will be held at the University of Washington on April 7-8, 2016. Speakers for the event include Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and Leslie Weldon, the Deputy Chief for National Forest System with the USDA Forest Service. 

The theme of this year’s event is Equity & the Environment:  Mobilizing the Next Generation of Leaders.  The goal of the event is to inspire, engage, and mobilize the next generation of diverse green leaders to help communities solve equity and environmental challenges. Through thought-provoking panel sessions, workshops, and high-impact networking opportunities, the event will help change the way employers and diverse young people connect for green career opportunities.

All students are encouraged to apply to attend - there is no cost but students must show commitment and passion, and attend both days of the event.

Last week the CSF was featured in a UW Daily article to celebrate the end of our first funding cycle this year! The committee approved over $140,000 to fund 7 innovative, student-led sustainability projects, including the Lab Glove Recycling pilot program, Green Futures Lab Floating Wetlands project, 2nd Annual UW Resilience Summit, UW Farm Composting Toilet, Campus Illumination project, Kincaid Ravine amendment, and UW Solar Life Sciences Building project. You can learn more about the mission and background of each of our new projects under our 2015-16 Approved Projects tab. As these project teams kick into implementation mode, the CSF committee has already started reviewing Letters of Intent (LOIs) for our second annual funding cycle. Stay tuned to hear what incredbile projects the CSF will approve this spring!

Each year the Campus Sustainability Fund allocates over $250,000 to on-campus, student-led, sustainability projects. Students receive grants that have ranged from $1,000 to $100,000 through our two annual funding cycles consisting of a preliminary Letter of Intent and Full Proposal. However, applications up to $1,000 can be submitted and funded anytime throughout the year with only a Letter of Intent. Nominations are now open for the Husky Green Awards!

The Husky Green Awards recognize students, faculty, staff and teams from all UW campuses who demonstrate initiative, leadership and dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability. All members of the UW community can submit nominations, and this year everyone who submits a nomination will be entered into a drawing to win a prize pack including Husky Grind coffee and a reusable mug.

Calling all design savvy students! The CSF is seeking a student to facilitate the design, implementation and production of various branding and communication endeavors in the 2015-2016 school year! The mission of the CSF is to create a sustainable campus and foster an environmentally conscious culture by funding student-lead projects from a portion of student fees to lessen the university’s environmental impact.

Possible endeavors, or projects, may include but are not limited to: stickers, letterhead, newsletter templates, project specific one-sheets, banners, etc. Specifics will be determined upon employment depending on the interests and skills of the Creative’s Assistant and CSF’s needs at the time of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Full- or part-time student status at the UW Seattle campus during term of employment  Communication, graphic design and/or layout expertise
Desired:
Ability to work on a personal computer, access to assorted industry standard software
Ability to present portfolio or samples of similar work
Familiarity with sustainability initiatives at the University of Washington

DUTIES
Required:
Negotiate and determine specific project(s) scope and deliverables with CSF Coordinator upon hiring
Work on creative deliverables predominantly in the CSF’s office on campus, or remotely as needed & negotiated.
Secure vendors for specific direct material and productions costs, work with CSF Coordinator to ensure their purchase (example: printing, tote bag suppliers, etc.) while staying within budget
Consult with CSF Outreach Coordinator, CSF Committee Members and CSF Coordinator for strategic prioritizing of future creative undertakings.
Produce complete deliverable(s) in both physical and digital forms at the conclusion of the position and when earnings cap is hit.

Student teams are invited to apply for funding to build prototypes for the Alaska Airlines Environmental Innovation Chal­lenge. These funds can be used to purchase materials, rent equipment, or hire short-term workers with skills beyond the team’s capacity. Application closes Sunday, Dec. 20 at midnight.

Students are our best hope for solving the world’s most pressing environmental problems. If you have passion and the desire to make an im­pact, the Challenge is for you. In the EIC, interdisciplinary student teams define an en­vironmental problem, design a solution, build a prototype and/or a computer simulation, and create a business summary that demonstrates the market potential.

What is eligible? 
Any product, process or service that reduces waste, minimizes en­ergy consumption, and contributes to a healthier planet. Re-use, recycling, water usage, energy generation, green consumer prod­ucts, and nanotechnology - all are ripe for innovation.

The UW student chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration's (SER-UW) native plant nursery is located on campus at the Center for Urban Horticulture (CUH). It is a student run operation that provides plants to the on-campus restoration projects that SER-UW manages. This year, with the support of a Campus Sustainability Fund grant, the nursery is expanding by building a new hoop house, growing more plants from seed and cuttings, and increasing its opportunities for volunteer involvement.

Request for internship applicants

The native plant nursery is seeking two undergraduate student interns for winter quarter. Interns are expected to devote an average of 9 hours a week to nursery projects. In conjunction with the co-managers, interns will develop learning objectives based on individual interests and strengths, to receive credit for ESRM 399 or their school’s equivalent. The interns' time will be split between routine plant maintenance, plant propagation, nursery infrastructure projects, helping with weekly volunteer work parties, and individual projects. Each intern will have a different focus to help tackle the many and diverse needs of a native plant nursery. Possible internship roles include:

Building Projects Intern will help with the construction of the hoop house. The applicant should be comfortable with power tools (or willing to learn).

Communications Intern will help develop an advertising strategy to increase volunteer involvement, assist with SER-UW’s Wordpress website design, advertise work parties, and maintain and increase the club’s social media presence.

Plant Order Coordinator will orchestrate the purchasing and pickup of plants by the restoration capstone course. He or she will also manage the inventory and help us determine what plants to grow for the restoration capstone course next year.

Work Party Coordinator will help plan weekly work parties that are focused on building the hoop house, plant salvages and plant propagation and maintenance work.

Both Interns are expected to:

• be willing to get dirty, get wet, and work in all weather conditions
• be on time and follow directions closely
• work well with fellow interns and co-managers, and be comfortable working independently
• problem solve and know when to ask for help
• work well with volunteers- be available for weekly volunteer work parties
• be able to lift 40 lbs and walk on uneven terrain
