Each year the Campus Sustainability Fund allocates over $250,000 to on-campus, student-led, sustainability projects. Students receive grants that have ranged from $1,000 to $100,000 through our two annual funding cycles consisting of a preliminary Letter of Intent and Full Proposal. However, applications up to $1,000 can be submitted and funded anytime throughout the year with only a Letter of Intent. In the past these small projects grants have been used to sponser panel discussions, recycling video projects and more. Check out the full list here. If you're interested, apply today.

Nominations are now open for the Husky Green Awards!

The Husky Green Awards recognize students, faculty, staff and teams from all UW campuses who demonstrate initiative, leadership and dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability. All members of the UW community can submit nominations, and this year everyone who submits a nomination will be entered into a drawing to win a prize pack including Husky Grind coffee and a reusable mug.

Calling all design savvy students! The CSF is seeking a student to facilitate the design, implementation and production of various branding and communication endeavors in the 2015-2016 school year! The mission of the CSF is to create a sustainable campus and foster an environmentally conscious culture by funding student-lead projects from a portion of student fees to lessen the university’s environmental impact.

Possible endeavors, or projects, may include but are not limited to: stickers, letterhead, newsletter templates, project specific one-sheets, banners, etc. Specifics will be determined upon employment depending on the interests and skills of the Creative’s Assistant and CSF’s needs at the time of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Full- or part-time student status at the UW Seattle campus during term of employment  Communication, graphic design and/or layout expertise
Desired:
Ability to work on a personal computer, access to assorted industry standard software
Ability to present portfolio or samples of similar work
Familiarity with sustainability initiatives at the University of Washington

DUTIES
Required:
Negotiate and determine specific project(s) scope and deliverables with CSF Coordinator upon hiring
Work on creative deliverables predominantly in the CSF’s office on campus, or remotely as needed & negotiated.
Secure vendors for specific direct material and productions costs, work with CSF Coordinator to ensure their purchase (example: printing, tote bag suppliers, etc.) while staying within budget
Consult with CSF Outreach Coordinator, CSF Committee Members and CSF Coordinator for strategic prioritizing of future creative undertakings.
Produce complete deliverable(s) in both physical and digital forms at the conclusion of the position and when earnings cap is hit.

Student teams are invited to apply for funding to build prototypes for the Alaska Airlines Environmental Innovation Chal­lenge. These funds can be used to purchase materials, rent equipment, or hire short-term workers with skills beyond the team’s capacity. Application closes Sunday, Dec. 20 at midnight.

About the Environmental Innovation Challenge
Students are our best hope for solving the world’s most pressing environmental problems. If you have passion and the desire to make an im­pact, the Challenge is for you. In the EIC, interdisciplinary student teams define an en­vironmental problem, design a solution, build a prototype and/or a computer simulation, and create a business summary that demonstrates the market potential.

What is eligible? 
Any product, process or service that reduces waste, minimizes en­ergy consumption, and contributes to a healthier planet. Re-use, recycling, water usage, energy generation, green consumer prod­ucts, and nanotechnology - all are ripe for innovation.

The UW student chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration's (SER-UW) native plant nursery is located on campus at the Center for Urban Horticulture (CUH). It is a student run operation that provides plants to the on-campus restoration projects that SER-UW manages. This year, with the support of a Campus Sustainability Fund grant, the nursery is expanding by building a new hoop house, growing more plants from seed and cuttings, and increasing its opportunities for volunteer involvement.

Request for internship applicants

The native plant nursery is seeking two undergraduate student interns for winter quarter. Interns are expected to devote an average of 9 hours a week to nursery projects. In conjunction with the co-managers, interns will develop learning objectives based on individual interests and strengths, to receive credit for ESRM 399 or their school’s equivalent. The interns' time will be split between routine plant maintenance, plant propagation, nursery infrastructure projects, helping with weekly volunteer work parties, and individual projects. Each intern will have a different focus to help tackle the many and diverse needs of a native plant nursery. Possible internship roles include:

Building Projects Intern will help with the construction of the hoop house. The applicant should be comfortable with power tools (or willing to learn).

Communications Intern will help develop an advertising strategy to increase volunteer involvement, assist with SER-UW’s Wordpress website design, advertise work parties, and maintain and increase the club’s social media presence.

Plant Order Coordinator will orchestrate the purchasing and pickup of plants by the restoration capstone course. He or she will also manage the inventory and help us determine what plants to grow for the restoration capstone course next year.

Work Party Coordinator will help plan weekly work parties that are focused on building the hoop house, plant salvages and plant propagation and maintenance work.

Both Interns are expected to:

• be willing to get dirty, get wet, and work in all weather conditions
• be on time and follow directions closely
• work well with fellow interns and co-managers, and be comfortable working independently
• problem solve and know when to ask for help
• work well with volunteers- be available for weekly volunteer work parties
• be able to lift 40 lbs and walk on uneven terrain

Through the University of Washington and Seattle City Light’s continuing Green Up program partnership, up to $15,000 of matching funds will be available this fall for CSF projects focused on renewable energy installations or education components. Depending on the demand during the fall-winter CSF funding cycle, funding may also be available during the spring application cycle. This exciting agreement marks the first external funding grant for the CSF.

The UW has been part of SCL’s Green Up program since 2006 when the University committed to buying 100% green power. In conjunction, SCL agreed to provide funding for renewable energy work at the UW such as staff and student projects and the creation of educational outreach materials. The UW-SCL partnership hopes to continue jointly leveraging their academic and economic resources to bring about a greener energy future.

As a part of their renewed agreement in April of 2015, the UW-SCL partnership has agreed to grant renewable energy project funding through the existing CSF application process. Previously, the CSF has enabled large scale renewable energy projects such as UW Solar. During the 2012-13 school year, the CSF awarded UW Solar $89,500 of funding to conduct a feasibility study and then install solar panels on a new UW Housing and Food Services building. Moving forward, this new auxiliary funding will allow the CSF to support a greater number of projects like UW Solar while continuing to increase overall student involvement in campus sustainability.

Each year the CSF committee controls the allocation of over $250,000 to student-led projects! As a voting CSF committee member, you will have the opportunity to provide direction to all aspects of the fund; including project approval, strategic visioning and budget oversight. The committee consists of seven student voting members, three ex-officios and a variable number of non-voting memebers. This year the ASUW Board of Directors and GPSS will each be appointing two voting members to join the committee.

Have you read the latest CSF Newsletter? Check it out to learn about the summer progress made on a number of CSF projects! Most notably, trails, benches and educational signs have been installed in Kincaid Ravine. Meanwhile, the SER-UW Nursery has been taking care of plant starts in preparation for their autumn nursery expansion. Lastly, the Yesler Swamp Trek Stop is on track for completion in spring 2016. It was a very busy and highly productive month at the CSF! Our newest projects are making strides and changes are already starting to take shape. This will be the last newsletter for this school year, but no fear - you will still be receiving at least 1 newsletter update this summer because sustainability never stops! The 2014-2015 academic year has been a very exciting year for the CSF, and we hope to continue with that momentum. Thank you to all the students, staff, faculty, and departments for supporting and working together with us for the past year. We couldn't have done it without you!
